Nikon D80 and Canon Digital Rebel XTi

For those that want an SLR camera without the weight and added complexity of the Nikon D200, both the Nikon D80 (1.5 lb. body) and the Canon Digital Rebel XTi (1.2 lb. body) are good choices. I have not had either one in my own hands yet, but I feel comfortable recommending either one of them, based on information I have read and conversations with others. These two cameras just came on the market at the end of August and beginning of September. From what I have heard and read the Nikon D80 may be a better choice for those of you with larger hands. It is a bit wider than the Rebel. However, both cameras have much to offer for use in dental photography as well as recreational use. For example, both cameras feature a larger LCD screen with 2mp more than their predecessors.

My comments on the above cameras and accessories are meant to help simplify and demystify what can be an overwhelming amount of information on digital cameras. There are certainly many options available, and my recommendations of these do not exclude other equipment that may be very good for dental photography as well. I will continue to keep a watchful eye on new developments. Please feel free to contact me if you have any comments or questions on this article.

I look forward to hearing from you! - Sam
